Recognizing Kosovo is a bold move for lame-duck Bush, but he won’t be around to deal with the consequences.

FactFinder:

Kosovo is part of Serbia, period !!!!
The KLA are no different from any Islamic extremist group, they are terrorists. Didn't the USA have a civil war to stop the Sourthern states going independent?? Same thing different period of time. Doesnt Gordon Brown strongly oppose an Independent Scotland. I think if Kosovo gets its independence then the Serbs in the north of that region should break away from Kosovo and also break away from Bosnia to from a greater Serbia. While we are at it dont forget the those who want a Basque state.

For all you foreigners out there.. I know you don't know much about Yugoslavia and Kosovo. Even those of you who think that spending a few months with a bunch of KLA guys entitles you to think you "know" the region are quite plain wrong.

To all of you I pose this question..Which none of you can answer.. If Serbs are truly so unjust to minorities, if they are truly so evil and so genocidal. Then why is Serbia, BY FAR the most ethnically diverse country in the Balkans. All the other nations are "pure". Serbia is the only place where they live in harmony. Think about this VERY HARD. If Serbs truly wanted to cleanse Serbia of Albanians, why didn't they start with the 100,000 Albanians living in Belgrade? Or the over 500,000 living in other parts of Serbis? No amount of propaganda can answer these questions can it...

It's that simple, that easy to break the propaganda bubble.. It really is.. If you don't believe me, check yourself.

Mindysan:

First, my link- an article I wrote about Albin Kurti and the self determination movement in Kosova- which considered it's self a pro-Kosova movement, meaning getting beyond the ethnic distinctions of Albanian, Serb, Roma, etc... here is where the term Kosovar is correct, I think (I'm going on the view that such things are constructions anyway). Kurti and others are trying to get people to see beyond that, to get the UN and EU out of the area and force the various factions to work together:

http://www.trakmarx.com/?p=211

Second- there is a difference (yes semantic- I know) between genocide and ethnic cleansing. Holocaust, genocide. The expulsion of Germans from the Sudatenland after the end of WW2- ethnic cleansing. But again, it's semantics. One could argue that what happened in the post-Yugoslav wars were ethnic cleansing, not genocide. But, on some level, does it matter? People died.

Third, I will not address absurd claims, that meat trucks were not found in the Danube. Nor will I address anti-Serb slurs, because I think that the people of Serbia are just like any others. Some are not good people, some are good people. People are people, and nationalistic identities are constructs.

Fourth- one mans terrorist organization (say Hezbollah, for example, or perhaps the IRA) is another man's freedom fighters. If there are radical Muslims in Kosova, it can be blamed on UNMIK letting Wahhabist linked groups into the area to cater to poor Kosovars, converting young men to the Wahhabist point of view. If there are radical Islamist in Kosova, it's the fault of UNMIK. People I know from there aren't exactly radical muslims...

Fifth- Ottoman's forced conversions of christians? Really? There is no evidence to back up this claim, really. There were certainly financial incentives to convert, and I'm sure that some people probably converted out of fear that was probably misplaced. Explain how there were still Orthodox Christians in the region after all this time, then? If people were forced to convert and the Ottoman troops spent all their time destroying the faith and looting sacred sites, would there be churches that were built during the Ottoman period? Would there still be Christians in the area at all, much less the many various forms of Christianity in the area today? Would the church have been recognized by the Ottomans? It's pretty clear that the Ottoman empire was a very heterogeneous mix of peoples, languages, and religions and in fact thrived on that fact. Cultural diversification was actually a strength of the Ottoman empire and brought it through to the 20th century (unlike the ridiculus assumption by many historians that from the post Suleiman period onward, it was a steady decline for the Empire).

Now, I'm sure I'm about to be told I'm wrong and how, so please tell me. But maybe we can all learn something from each others point of view, instead of just assuming that a differing opinion is a wrong one.

SERBIAN NATIONALIST OBSERVER:

Kosovo is Serbia.
It is on these lands where the Ottomans burned & destroyed the Orthodox Christian relics forcing the Serbs to convert to Islam. Today in Kosovo, Albanians burn & destroy our churches. It is in Kosovo where the Serb Forces & Milos Obilic were defeated in 1389. Milos Obilic was then brought to bow down before the Sultan of the Ottomans. Instead of bowing, he plunged a blade into the Sultan's stomach, killing him.He was then beheaded by the Sultans gaurds. Serbs since then have celebrated the day of their defeat (Battle of Kosovo, 1389). For it was not a day of defeat, it was a day where the Serbs were defeated and AT ALL COSTS refused to recognize Kosovo as the Sultan's land. Today Serbs refuse Kosovo as ALBANIAN LAND not kosovar's land. 1389 literally shaped and created Serbia's national identity. You americans may laugh, but our national identity is much more aged then your "cowboy" cpuntry itself. Kosovo is Serbia's national identity, so is it no suprise why Serbs have resorted to violence. We can be democratic and peaceful. Serbians feel cheated by America's & Nato's false promise of UN Charter 1244 : Kosovo Is Serbia. What is democracy to a serbian? He will tell you to be lied and cheated. I will finish my statement with a famous quote by American president: George W. Bush.
"The United States will recognize the indapendance. We beleive this move will bring peace to the balkans."

THE WORLD BEGS TO DIFFER GEORGE!

Maksimo:

To 'American observer'

Enough with your silly comments, your only embarrasing yourself.

Aleks:

American Observer makes a number of unsubstantiated claims.

1: "The Serbs made it clear that they intended for the majority of the people alive and remaining in Kosovo to be Serbs."

Provide back up for this that is not 'opinion', or are you going to refer to the fictional Operation Podkovka of the 'Horse-Shoe Plan', sourced from the Bulgarians and built up by the Germans? Please, do provide me with your rock solid sources.

2: Meat trucks = genocide.

Please provide supportive evidence rather than emotional drivel. Or maybe you want to tell me of the "100,000" Albanian men who have gone 'missing', presumable killed as was spouted at the time. Even better, why don't you quote me that the Serbs burnt all the bodies in the Trepca mining complex.

Do go and look up "genocide" in a dictionary.

3: "...before you can admit that the Serbs intended the genocide of the Kosovars?"

"Admit"? Don't you mean wholehartedly parroting your 'opinion' as you see it regardless of its non-existent relationship to fact.

There are no 'Kosovars' (the Albanians call themselves Albanian, geddit?), there are Kosovo Albanians, Serbs, Roma, Egyptians, Turkomans etc.

It's sad that you seek only to recycle every cliche you've read.

4: "That means that the Serbs were planning to kill or expel another forty percent of the population of Kosovo, and maybe more."

? You tell me categorically "that means", yet you finish your phrase with the rather uncertain "..and maybe more". Is that the best you can do? What of the thousands of refugees, albanian and others that fled north, further into Serbia, or don't they exist as the mainstream media were not interested in reporting so.

5: "Nato pulled ten of these trucks from the river."

Really? NATO you say. Reports ("Kurir" I believesay that they were pulled out by Belgrade authorities.

6: "..The Serbs might have filled more meat trucks, but the Nato bombing got in the way..."

Again, mere supposition. That means you are making a guess based on your own opinions.

7: "The Serbs massacred entire families of Kosovars."

Oh, I get it, 'Kosovars', who you take entirely to mean Albanians (to the exclusion of every other minority) are the victims. I've actually bothered to read some of the transcripts of the ICTY.

At least on one occaision, KLA members retreated to their homes which had been heavily fortified and refused to surrender or be taken prisoner. They were heavily armed, including the women (the KLA used women as snipers and soldiers).

But no, some people think that war is all about two lines of men in uniforms marching towards each other in a straight line and taking turns firing at each other. Oh, and when they take of their uniform, they suddenly become 'civilians'.

Nothing, nada, zilch you have written supports in any way your belief that the "Serbs intended genocide on the Kosovars".

Please take up you case about 'genocide in Kosovo' with the International Criminal Court because your opinion is at serious odds with reality.

American Observer:

Aleks says:

"For the comments I've read about 'genocide' in Kosovo, could the commenter tell me whether in their opinion how close events in Kosovo were to to Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Bergen-Belsen, the Eastern Front, or say Algeria 1991+ or Rwanda?"

American Observer replies:

The Serbs massacred entire families of Kosovars. The Serbs then stuffed their bodies into meat trucks and drove those trucks into the Daunube. Nato pulled ten of these trucks from the river. The Serbs might have filled more meat trucks, but the Nato bombing got in the way.

Tell me, 'Aleks,' what exactly does the word 'genocide' mean to you? As you know, the Serbs formed ten percent of the population of Kosovo, and the Serbs made it clear that they intended for the majority of the people alive and remaining in Kosovo to be Serbs. That means that the Serbs were planning to kill or expel another forty percent of the population of Kosovo, and maybe more. Tell me, if you would, why that is not genocide? Exactly how many meat trucks do we need to recover before you can admit that the Serbs intended the genocide of the Kosovars?

Anonymous:

Kosovo = KLA Kosovo Liberation Army, Terrorist Organisation.

All of it is a matter of public record. Are Americans really that uninformed?

Aleks:

"...While many believed Montenegro's secession from Serbia was inevitable."

? I am quite suprised by this error, especially as you actually went there.

Montenegro was never part of Serbia so it couldn't have seceeded. It had a republic status of its own, it's own royal dynasty etc. Montenegro seceeded from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia of which it was a partner with Serbia, it did not seceed from Serbia.

Apart from that, talk of 'emotion' is misplaced and only feeds into those who seek to divert attention away from the Wests blatant emasculation of the UJ (i.e., it doesn't do what we want, so we will ignore it) and places attention on 'emotional' Serbs and others - giving the impression that they are behaving 'irrationaly' and ergo the international community is behaving 'rationally'.

Overall, this is a pretty good piece. Most journalists and media can't get past the 'Serbs evil, Albanians angels' claptrap.

As for Kosovo's prospects, it doesn't have any unfortunately. In the last election in Kosovo, 55% of the electorate did not vote. This could be for a number of reasons, but it is extremely odd that they didn't. Could it be that they saw no politician or parties that represented their aspirations?

As for the minorities, this is an old story. Marek Anton Nowicki, former Ombudsman for Kosovo from 2000, did not have his tenure renewed after 2005.

He was not replaced. Hence, a potential embarassing source of information from official western organs in Kosovo was silenced.

He has since said that whenever he tried to bring up the problems of the minorities with UNMIK and other international authorities, they more or less ignored him or accused him of not 'playing with the team'. See Nowicki's 'Kosovo Pro Memoria'

For the comments I've read about 'genocide' in Kosovo, could the commenter tell me whether in their opinion how close events in Kosovo were to to Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Bergen-Belsen, the Eastern Front, or say Algeria 1991+ or Rwanda?

Londra Negra:

"Serbs have ransacked the American Embassy in Belgrade": actually they set only a few rooms with minor importance on fire.
"I suggested that originally, the plan was for Kosovo's leaders to demonstrate their ability to govern responsibly before embarking on a path of sovereignty": failing that plan one should suppose that a Plan B would follow with hard guarantees for minority rights, including a secession of the Serb majority areas. Instead we got the Ahtisaari plan that considers any hard guarantee a violation of Kosovo's sovereignty.
International law is clear: a country has a veto right on secessions. Serbia is very well aware of the price of having a hostile dirtpoor province and Kosovo might have a good chance to win independence from Serbia if they met its main concerns: the welfare of Kosovo's Serb minority and its monuments. But with the solid support of the US no Albanian nationalist sees the need to make such consessions.

Helio:

I am tired to hear agin and again the description of Kosovar Albanians as muslims. What difference does this make? I believe it suffice to say they are Albanians without adding any religious or racial or whatever comment boforehand or afterhand.I simply ask you to get over this issue, because it is simply not interesting anymore for readers to hear such comments.

KOCOBO:

It is very typical for Americans to attack serbs. Wasn't it America who had a civil war to supress seperatists?Hmmmm
Prime minister Thaci is a terrorist, who lead the KLA group whith genocide histories in Croatia before Kosovo.
Isn't America fighting a War on terror? America is supporting terror!
How many foriegn nations have american troops stationed in them? Iraq, Afghanistan, & now illegaly proclaimed "Kosova".How many nations have their soldiers in America from saving the american people from a more corrupt government then they claim others to be."Hey Americans" Should Los Angeles be ceded to Mexico because their is many latinos living their? So why should Kosovo be ceded to people who populated like rabbits(Wouldn't you like to know that the average ethnic albanian family in kosovo has an average of 6 children. Kosovo has an unemployment rate of 50%, why have 6 children when you can't feed one? The intent is clear, to "ETHNICALLY CLEANSE SERBS!). Wouldn't you Americans like to know that 9/11 was supported by your own government. It is the CIA who trained Osama Bin Laden and supported him with monetary aid and weapons. What did he do in the years to come, he attacked America. For that 1 day American citizens finally felt what citizens were suffering when they bombed Hiroshima,When they were raping women in Vietnam and doing acid,When they bombed Hospital,Schools and the Chinese Embassy in Serbia(All civilian targets). Wait a minute, isn't America crying about their precious embassy being burned down in Belgrade? 10 years ago Chinese & Serbs were protesting when Americans and Nato bombed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade. Nato and the Americans claimed the bombings as "accidental, they meant to hit a military target". If the world beleives Serbia, Russia & China are corrupt, then what is to make of the United States of America who has had more wars on foreign soil then on their own. It is easy for them to destroy other countries and watch them suffer economically. Yet the United States is argueably the most powerfuly nation economically, yet how many wars have been fought on their soil. That have lead to the destruction of their hospitals, schools and other civilian targets. America was attacked in Peal Harbor(A MILITARY TARGET), yet they used this to justify them nuking A CIVILIAN TARGET! Point Zero in the middle of Hiroshima. America was again attacked in 9/11, I do have remorse for innocents that died. America again used this to bomb and invade Afghanistan. Osama Bin Laden has lived in more then one Arabic country, they bombed Afghanistan because they thought he was there. Have they found him? So all those troops who continue to die for America as I speak today? What do they fight for. Peace & Democracy? While the american government breaks and re-makes international laws to better suit their wishes. I am a serb and I am proud. I am proud when pro-western people stereotype me as Nationalist,Radical & Evil. I am proud because they have bad guys like me to point at, but when 9/11 happens again. I know americans will realize all along they've been helping the wrong people. Today Albanians praise the American flag, tommorow they will be burning it. Thaci and the KLA was funded by the Al Queda in the beginning to secede from Serbia and form an Islamic State. Today America is allies with Thaci & KLA, at the same time claiming to fight a war on terror.

YTS:

Few realise that the current Kosovo government is the rump of a terrorist organisation-KLA, Kosovo Liberation Army.

I am not sure if I want a terrorist organisation have independence and call itself a "government" especially as Kosovars are known trouble makers in Europe in smuggling, theft, etc.

Nik:

First off, the Hague came out with a ruling that there was no genocide committed. I'm not defending what was done, but only to say that it was not as bad a western media made it to be.

Secondly, if illegal immigrants from Mexico said they wanted parts of Texas and California because they have the majority, what would the US do? Most likely try to put down this rebellion by words then by force if necessary, but if they went in and did use force then by the precedent Kosovo is setting, these parts should eventually become self-governing territories. Also to point out the KLA is a terrorist group according to the CIA list of terrorist groups, so if there are terrorists groups there what about W's WOT.

Also the Kosovo government wants to integrate the Serbs in northern Kosovo, how about they start rebuilding the 150 churches destroyed by bombings/mobs, they said that they were committed to do this 8 years ago and have yet to build one/repair one. If everything is so peaceful and the Albanians so nice, why is there a need for the Serbian monasteries to be guarded by UN troops, most of the monasteries are in territories where Albanians make up the majority.

By some people's logic in posts have said if they are oppressed then they should receive their freedom. What about the Kurds or the Armenians or the Basque people of Spain or Quebec in Canada or the Faeroe Islands, the list goes on and on, why does one place have the right to self-govern and not another?

LAKOTA:

I have two things to say.
1. http://www.republicoflakotah.com/
2. In 50 years when the mexicans are majority in California and vote for independance I wonder will Rusia recognise them?

Mikra:

Some of the pro-Serbian comments here are nothing more but the typical type of garbage that has actually remained of the self-perpetuating pathology of Serbian lies and propaganda.

You know, before the world discovered the true face of the Serbian fascism, Serbs tried to portray Albanians as creatures living on trees. When this racism didn't work in the modern world, the Serbs switched to another desperate mode of attempting to make Kosovo look like some Islamic place infested by islamofascists that would start exporting terrorism across Europe. Then they realized that can't actually make the international community swallow this garbage as Kosovars are the most pro-western, pro-American, non-religious people in the entire continent.

What are they up to now?

You see from the post above. Another pathetically desperate move to try and make the place a criminal heaven. And this is not just from anybody. Slobodan Samardzic, a Serbian minister in charge of the so-called Kosovo affairs, was quoted on BBC a few days ago as saying: "Our aim [Serbian] is to make Kosovo look as a criminal state". Of course they are going to try to do this, just like they tried everything against Kosovo Albanians, but in the end, Kosovars triumphed because the democratic world discovered the true face of Serbian fascism and eventually decided to put a stop to it.

What has remained of Serbia and Serbs today is nothing but empty slogans, resentment, desperation among people, and a moral and political breakdown of leadership.

Or as Mark Mardell of BBC put it today: "The toothless Serb syndrome".
What a tragedy for these people.

Kosovare:

I am trying to think of who am I reminded when I hear Serbian interpretation of historical events. Oh yes, that's right: Ahmadinejad! For him Holocaust didn't happen! Millions of Jews gassed themselves to death because the felt like it, just like Serbs seem to suggest that thousands of Albanians rushed into mass graves to make a point -- remember, their bodies are still being dug-up in mass graves in Serbia- I don't know what kind of other evidence would be convincing enough for Serbs!

Serb comments, not only in this blog but elsewhere on the web, are so revealing of what a profound and destructive impact the Serbian radical propaganda has had on its people. I guess it would take years and years of massive psychological counseling to deal with something of this scale.

The hatred that Serbia preaches today is a natural reaction that comes from defeat! As someone who suffered the terrors of Serb regime during the 1990s, I thought that there was nothing worse in the world than being a victim of the Serbian savagery at that time! I was so wrong! Now I understand that the only thing worse than being a victim of that regime was to be the blind believer of it. One can be healed from the former, but the latter is what consumes you.

P.S. It is pathetic when Serbs comment using American and other non-Serb names... a desperate move to have others support their genocidal past.

Progressive:

Here is a list of wise steps that Serbia could take following Kosovo’s independence:

1. Recognize it
2. Open an Embassy to start building diplomatic relations with its new neighboring COUNTRY
3. Promote Albanian language courses for the benefit of Serbian citizens for two main reasons:

a. Considering that the region is dominated by a large Albanian population and much of the trade is going to occur between Serbs and Albanians, it would help Serbs a lot to speak Albanian just like many Albanians already speak Serbian.

b. As Serbia is a landlocked country following Montenegro’s independence, many Serbs will start planning their vacations to the beautiful Albanian coast; thus, knowing the local language could prove as a great asset for having a great vacation. Otherwise, Serbs will have to resort to spending their vacations in Siberia, where, certainly, they will be “warmly” welcomed by their Slavic brothers.

On the other hand, the Republic of Kosovo along with the European Union would do everything they can to help Serbia move ahead towards its European path. The Prime Minister of Kosovo, has already expressed that he believes that Serbia belongs to Europe and should not hesitate to seek Kosovo’s support in getting there, despite our troubled past. The capital of the Republic, Prishtina, has also expressed its readiness to provide Belgrade with the much needed expertise in democratic governance and political reform. Kosovo has a long tradition of organizing free and democratic elections, so there too, the Kosovo expertise will be crucial in helping the Serbian people to identify leaders with radical and fascist platforms and implement ideas on how they can avoid electing them in the future.

Therefore, for all of those who have been skeptical about Kosovo—Serbia relationship, they are wrong. The Republic of Kosovo will be there for Serbia as it recovers from these difficult times.

Maksimo:

To Refresh and other Albanian propagandists,

Your comments are nothing short of laughable.

Kosovo war - just over 2000 casualties. Serbian and Albanian. Combatant and non-combatant. These are the figures provided by the UN in relation to the 1998-1999 Kosovo war.

A forensics team was sent to Kosovo just after the conclusion of hostilities, and found ABSOLUTELY NO EVIDENCE OF ATTROCITIES, despite searching for mass graves for months on end. These findings were surpressed by the western media. Even so, the truth is there for one who cares to learn it

The western media was so hungry to write about Serbian attrocities that they forgot all about journalistic and published stories based on hear-say and second hand information.

Lets not forget when Clinton stood in front of the cameras and stated that 500,000 albanians were feared to have been slaughtered by the Serbs.

Fact remains, Kosovo is legally and culturally Serbian land. It has never been and never will be Albanian. There is already an existing Albanian state, why should they get another one on foreign soil

artan:

its really absurd to read comments like Legaleyes, however i will not comment on his story but on the original comment from Vivian Salama, Dear Vivian the Kosovo issue does not have to anything personal with Bush, the U.S have always supported the efforts for independence even before Clinton was a president, there are no emotionalproblems of Kosova, it is easy for you to say since you will never understand and realize what does this independence mean to us.

You can not imagine what has this nation suffered frm the serb regime for almost a century, how would you feel if your country would be in Kosovas position, if you would lose all of your family members and if all of your relatives would be still missing, there are thousand of kosovar people still missing, some buried in massive graves and it is a shame to make comments like yours, I will let you know what the consequences will be from recognizing independent Kosova, the only consequence that you will see are positive, there will be peace and stability in the balkans, it is Russia and Serbia who want to make propaganda about precedents and conflicts which do not exist, its their imagination , I have personally seen russian mercenaries fighting against KLA and innocent civilians in Kosovo, and the world including prez Bush know who the Russians are very well. Kosovo is in the heart of Europe and not in Asia, I would Suggest Russia and China to watch their own business and not interfere in this democratic process which will definetely bring peace and stability.

Truth:

I have to agree with the Legaleye's comments. What he says is absolute truth.

I would also like to add the fake Racak Masacre Albanians staged. I don't want to go into any furhter detail, it is pointless but truth will eventually come out.

http://www.mail-archive.com/news@antic.org/msg00044.html

Serbians have survived 500 years under Turkish Ottoman Empire and so they will survive again.

conscience-to-the-world:

People of Kosovo have their own right to vote for independence similar to all nations and all groups of people wisht to seek indepence for themselves!
Serbia land of murderous evils or vampires which has created too much deaths and suffering for Kosovo people already in the evil assistances of Russia as seen in the past!

Dear LEGALEYE

I read your first paragraph and couldn't continue to the next one because i am very courious to learn something that preach. I have never heard of the war that you described above. I lived in Kosovo during the war and it was serbians killing albanians which estimated after the war that at least 10000 albanians were dead and thousands missing. As far as serbian deths in Kosovo well, do some research and you would be suprised that it wont reach 1000. The war in kosovo was clearly Albanian cleansing. You mention 40000 Serbians living in Prishtina before the war and now there is none. Well ever since the NATO intervantions you tell me how many Serbians were killed. People say, "If your hands are durty/bloody (killing inocent people) you will leave on your own". Serbians in Kosovo know how albanian culture is. Albanians are believers that a murder will be solved by another murder. Knowing this those serbians who comited crimes during the war couldn't stay anywhere close to albanians, No metter what guarantees they get. No Serbian was kicked out of Kosovo, the all moved to the north because thats what they felt was right for them. If Serbia is democratic, how come after 9 years of the war and continues requests by Kosovo and International comunity it still wont return hundreds of albanian bodies that it had murdered and traveled them to masiv graves in Serbia. I like to hear more of your interesting stories with no base cuse i like to read fiction. But i can tell you this because i have lived that war.

American Observer:

Vivian Salama says:

"....the issue is that there are no guidelines in international law for intervening with force so that a province can secede. The Russians are fully aware of this and it will likely show Moscow's attitude toward Chechnya."

American Observer replies:

As I understand it, Russia's attitude is that no province can leave either Russia or a republic which is subservient to Russia, so if the Kosovars want to leave Serbia or the Chechens want to leave the Russian Federation, it is okay and even necessary to massacre them. On the other hand, the Russians feel that it is always okay to use military force to help a province leave a republic which is hostile to the Russians, so the Russians feel they have a right to use Russian soldiers to help the Transdniester Republic defy Moldova, and the Russians feel they have a right to use Russian soldiers to help Abikhasia and the South Ossetia leave the Republic of Georgia.

The Russians have a simple position. The Russians have no regard for international law or any other kind of law, and the Russians have no regard for morality. Instead, the Russians simply believe that the Russians are big and strong and everybody else should do what the Russians want. Helping Kosovo become independent is not just about helping the Kosovars get their freedom from the Serbs; it is also about showing that Europe and the West are not afraid of Russians.

Vivian Salama says:

"....recognizing Kosovo may not be a bad decision, but it is a bold move for a lame duck U.S. administration that will not be around to claim responsibility should the Kosovo project go awry."

American Observer replies:

So, what do you think, Vivian? Do the Kosovars have a right to be free, yes or no? We know that you think the situation is complicated and we know that you think Bush is stupid -- you said that, and we understood it. Now, what about the morality of the situation? Do you dare to have an opinion?
